Can I get my money back from a wrong UPI transaction?

Yes, you can get your money back from a wrong UPI transaction by acting quickly and contacting the recipient, your UPI app’s customer support, your bank, and the Online Transaction Complaint to raise a formal complaint. You should also keep all transaction details handy and be prepared to follow up on your complaint

1. Contact the Recipient
  • Reach out directly:
If possible, contact the person to whom you accidentally sent money and politely request a refund.

  • Provide details:
Share all the transaction details, including the amount and UPI ID, to help them return the funds.

2. Contact Your UPI App’s Support

  • Use the app’s help section:
Open your UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm), go to the “Help” or “Support” section, and select the incorrect transaction.
  • Submit a complaint:
Choose the option for a wrong UPI transfer or incorrect account credited and submit a complaint. The app team may then reach out to the recipient’s bank to facilitate the reversal.
3. Escalate to Your Bank

  • Call customer care or visit a branch:
If the UPI app doesn’t resolve the issue, contact your bank’s customer support or visit a branch.

  • Provide transaction details:
Share the transaction ID (UTR), amount, and the recipient’s UPI ID with the bank officials. They can then escalate the issue through the NPCI.

4. Raise a Complaint with the NPCI

  • Use the NPCI website or contact number:
If the problem isn’t resolved by your bank, you can file a complaint on the NPCI website or call their dedicated customer care number for wrong transactions.

  • Follow the dispute redressal mechanism:
The NPCI provides a dispute redressal mechanism where you can raise and track your complaint.

5. Escalate Further if Needed
  • Contact the Banking Ombudsman:
If your complaint with NPCI remains unresolved after 30 days, you can escalate the matter to the Banking Ombudsman.

  • File a police complaint:
For large amounts or suspected fraudulent activity, consider filing a complaint with the police, especially the local cybercrime cell.

Important Tips

  • Act immediately: Acting quickly increases your chances of a successful recovery.

  • Keep records: Always have your transaction ID, payment details, and any communication records ready.
